So, i have had about 4 very old ('70s-80's) HEI ignition coils for a year or 2, and i have not done much with them. I decided i would put one in an oil bath and see just how much i can torture it before it gets fried. I will be dumping an MOC charged to 2kv into the primary to 'drive' it. Here are some pictures and a video of it making 6 inch sparks, just to help make your estimate a bit easier cheesey Link2

Is it hot glue ? or silicone being used to hold the Gray pipe to the top of that jar?

It is silicone. Im guessing you are about to say that transformer oil may eat through silicone? That could be problematic if so tongue

I dont know. Silicone may be fine, hot glue has a bad habit, being PE where liquids especially polar ones like water and acetone get between the substrate and glued face, then breaks the interface layer.

Watch for the silicone to weaken, if not your fine.

I too have gotten 6 inch sparks out of HEI Iggies in the late 90's, but ill bet on 8 inches being the most you get before the coil gives up the ghost.

i once plugged one straight into 115vac mains. that gave some pretty intense purple arcs, until the oil boiled and i unplugged it. MOC into iggy.. sounds like the king of stun guns. having seen the insides of the oil filled 'can' types of ignition coils, i'd say you could get over a foot with one of them. but yours looks like the solid kind, with a big iron core encased in epoxy/ceramic... ah screw it, i bet you can get a foot out of it if you overcharge the MOC (I hear they're good up to 8kv) let the torturing commence

I use the black engine gasket sealer (silicone too), with non-polar fluids like oil I've never had it leak yet.
Its good that you roughend / deglossed the plastic with sand paper.

vasil , member of this forum, got some monster sparks using ignition coils, but I can't find that section on his webpage right now. Maybe he will drop a few lines later.

He did also use 2 ignition coils in that setup for 12" sparks.
