I made a rectifier bridge this morning and tested it: it works great, I have an average voltage of 620V which is enough for my use. Now I can charge my capacitor bank within 3 seconds ( more or less 35W output ), that's a huge improvement compared to the NE555-based circuit I used previously.

The next step will be to find a cheap thyristor that can withstand a 800A pulse... any suggestions? thank you again

you still haven't said what voltage you want to charge your capacitors to. try putting your transformers primary over top of the secondary for better coupling and less losses.
 that scr will work for 15$+shipping. the 70tps12 from vishay is also pretty nice up to atleast 1400A (and it's in a to3P package) and since you can sample them free, i'd say that's the cheapest.

My goal is to charge a 3mF capacitor bank up to 400V.
