This thread presents one minimal HV supply, probably very similar (except in step-up ratio) to camera-flash charging circuits as suggested by Proud Mary.
Too bad you don't have the original circuit board from your CRT video-camera viewfinder. Complete video-camera viewfinders go for about $5 at hamfests.
As other people have said: if you want to design a complete system before construction, start with a representative CRT datasheet. If you want to learn to drive an undocumented CRT, read other user's advice and start with alligator clips on the lab bench -- don't worry about compact & efficient power supplies.

Proud Mary has a very valid point. 10w out of a PP3 probably isn't going to happen, that would be more than an amp. I do realize you said 10w max, but do you know what the minimum would be (once again, datasheet time )?

hey,
thanks for all your replies, i actually managed (not by design, just my shoddy circuit) to generate about 400v, which was then boosted with a cw multiplier, to 3kv, and it was powered with a 9v battery, it used only 300MW!, basically, its a 555 timer, mosfet, and reversed mains transformer, with a 5 stage multiplier. but it is no longer needed, as the crt is now.... deceased. lol dont ask why :P
