I have used a magneto with it's original iron core once. I powered it with a light dimmer and series capacitor, and it gave some pretty nice arcs, starting somewhere near 1 inch, and then it blew to hell. These coils have 2 windings in them, one is the HV output, and one is shorted to the core (IE, common) to kill the engine.
You must be careful though, as some of them also have a magnetic sensor and transistor in them to trigger at the right time. Im sure the winding with less turns is somehow connected to the transistor, so inputting some hundreds of voltage would not be great for it. Also, these cores do *not* like squarewaves. They will saturate and pull alot of current, and probably burn up the 'auxiliary' winding.

I have been thinking of doing this for months now. I think within the next week I will give it a shot since I have to wait for some mosfets to come as I believe I blew my IRFP460s on the ZVS
