you could slide the tickler on the tube all the way to the bottom have you tried that before? you should still have enough coupling to the tickler to drive the tube. what do you think?

Amazing coil RogerInOhio. I have a 3cx5000h3 I am thinking of making a large tesla coil with. Where did you get your tank capacitors and what is the voltage rating on them? They seem to be the Russian military surplus doorknobs that are common on ebay? You mentioned on another thread that you used wine bottle caps? How did they preform?

With all of my VTTC's I find myself tapping the tickler coil in a million places to find the sweet spot. Couldn't I put 30-40 turns below my primary and use a variable resistor to fine tune the voltage to my grid? Has anyone ever tried this?

Teravolt , It fell to the bottom once by accident and I didn't know it and tried to run the coil and it wouldn't run. It might work however If I put a lot more turns on it.
Weston, Yes they are the Russian type. Right now I just got so many in series just to get the capacity down to 275 pf. They are rated at 10kv each so it is really overkill on the voltage rating to have 12 in series. I'm going to get some smaller ones just so I won't need so many. One nice thing about running at high frequencies is that you don't need big tank capacitors.
The vine bottle capacitors work fine as long as the don't break. One thing that helps is to have them in a bucket with salt water on both sides so the temp of the glass stays the same on both sides. ( I got that tip from the geek group) Each bottle is about 1000 pf but if you are going to use them with a VTTC that runs on 7000 volts or more I would recommend using them in pairs of two in series. They work much better than beer bottle capacitors by the way.

when you put the tickler in the middle you must of hit a current or voltage node in the middle of the secondary do you know what the free resonance of the secondary is and the frequency of tesla while it is opperating
