So recently my ZVS flyback driver died, i ordered new parts, they arrived, designed a new layout, solder it to a radio shack pcb. Ubber simple connections underneath, all the parts are brand new. When it came time to test it....it didn't work of course. I used a 12v 5ah battery, when i connected the positive i got a short circuit looking spark from the battery with no output. If I bring the neg. near the pos. output and tap the power I get a small 1mm bright spark. The left mostfet gets hot fast while the right stays mostly cool. I have also gone over all solder lines for a "break" in the connection all to find there all conducting. Also the inductor was from a psu, it was quite large and was blue and green, it has 25 turns of 18 gauge wire.

Hopefully someone can figure this one out, I had to give up it bothered me so much, thanks.

Edit it only seems to draw current when there is no load (flyback primary) connected. Could it be to much capacitance? I have two .68uf caps in parallel

Edit: FYI when viewing pictures you can zoom further by holding CRTL and Scrolling

I replaced the two .68uf 250v caps for two .33uf 250v caps. I replaced the mosfet that gets hot and also replaced the fast diodes. I replaced the inductor for one I am sure works, but still nothing. It just maks a loud pop when i connect it to a battery and makes a tiny tiny spark at the output. I am supper frustrated with this and have know idea of what i could be.

are you sure you have the centertap right on the primary? could the copper traces on the board be shorting somthing? it looks like you went in and ground them all out, but maybe you missed one or didn't get all of it. try rebuilding it without the board.

Did you hook one of the zener diodes up wrong? It looks from the top that the right one is backwards. I did that with mine once and I had the same problem. I just flipped it around and it worked perfect (:

No I dont think it is. they both go from gate to source along with the 10k resistors. This is so frustrating because i have been over it so many times and everything checks out every time. Its so perfect that in fact i am waiting for it to suddenly start up (wishing).

But thanks for the help, any more ideas would really help

yes that has to be it. i am using some really old lead based solder. I know its bad i ran out of my lead free stuff and have been to lazy to get more. I will try it.

Nope that wasn't it... I cleaned it very well an tried it but its still not working. As soon as i touch the positve lead of the bat. to turn it on it arks and all most looks like the power is shorting.

are you sure that the cap is connected to the cathode sides of the fast diodes? I was scrating my head for 2 or 3 hours to find this silly mistake when I rebilt my ZVS driver.
