Sorry for a double post, but I gots some images to upload. I decided to use the plastic from an LCD TV to make a capacitor for ol' sparky, and when charged to 85kV it holds about 7j. lawl.

1309033943 2893 FT118472 Dsc00192

Nonetheless, with this thing attached the sparks sound a lot more like a .22, and they are so bright that I really can't look at them. Oh and they also destroy wooden dowels.

I presume it's the shockwaves that destroy the stick. I need more power!
...maybe I'll get some more caps and make it an 8 stage multiplier cheesey

Also, managed to capture an image of only one spark. It's quite bright!

I'm not bringing my scope anywhere near that ion waterfall.

Although, maybe it's possible to measure if I put a large loop of wire (~8ft) around the thing and pickup the signal inductively...

I would do it for you.... and yes i was thinking of something that didnt involve direct conduction, while my cheap USB scope and old laptop were in a faraday cage.

Just build a 'scope with a tube rated to cope with a deflection voltage of 100KV or so.
IIRC acceleration voltages are normally something like 100 times the deflection voltages.
Have fun.

The aluminium foil in your capacitor is a show in itself in that movie of yours!

Nice job done with the CW :)

Putting a loop around the CW and scoping it did do something, but any values on the scope were completely unreadable. The screed displayed something akin to uifjierjfierjfreiufjreiufhyediuryrsdkjmdfjrdewskht iewjfiojdfcioremi6543wdftreswkjfierjfreiufjreiufhy ediuryrsdkjmdfjrdewskhtiewjfiojdfcioremik had it been a book I was reading.

yeah it would take some "figuring" to get a useful measurement, maybe a 1 inch diameter antenna of twisted pair?
