In the USA, and according to the US Pharmacopeia, "Rubbing Alcohol and all preparations under the classification of Rubbing Alcohols are manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Formula 23-H (8 parts by volume of acetone, 1.5 parts by volume of methyl isobutyl ketone, and 100 parts by volume of ethyl alcohol) being used. It contains not less than 68.5 percent and not more than 71.5 percent by volume of dehydrated alcohol, the remainder consisting of water and the denaturants, with or without color additives, and perfume oils. Rubbing Alcohol contains, in each 100 mL, not less than 355 mg of sucrose octaacetate or not less than 1.40 mg of denatonium benzoate. The preparation may be colored with one or more color additives, listed by the FDA for use in drugs. A suitable stabilizer may be added. Rubbing Alcohol complies with the requirements of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms of the U.S. Treasury Department.

NOTE—Rubbing Alcohol is packaged, labeled, and sold in accordance with the regulations issued by the U.S. Treasury Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms."

Nothing causes such complication as the propagation of error!

IPA is recommended for general electrical cleaning, whilst US Rubbing Alcohol contains acetone and is not.

hmm. I'm not sure where they sell proud mary's "Rubbing Alcohol" with all that junk in it, that sounds more like denatured alcohol. i just got some 91% isopropyl from the grocery store for about 85 cents. it's found next to the bandages and h202. put it in a little spray bottle. pretty handy stuff.

If you search under Pennsylvania Wholesale Chemicals you'll find a good number of suppliers of Rubbing Alcohol not far from your home.

edit: unless you get your rubbing alcohol from a chemical supplier, then it should be fine to use. look for the 90% or higher isopropyl stuff.

how's the diode string going?

wouldn't it be safer to use the isopropyl stuff on electronics because it doesn't have the acetone in it?

You seem not to have noticed that I have made this point above.

As for 'going off topic,' nothing can be so off topic as glaring errors left uncorrected.
