I have used a halfbridge and H bridge driven by a 555 and something like 40-80v input, and the voltage is high enough to kill the diodes, cause breakout, and cause carbon tracks to ruin the flyback, especially if you find the resonant frequency of the flyback.  That was probably because of over power, not over voltage. For a given input voltage the flyback mode drivers will get the highest output voltage, but not power. Push pull drivers will get you the maximum output power, but not voltage. The fact that you can draw 10cm arcs with a push pull drivers doesn't mean you have 100Kv, just that you have enough power to sustain the arc.
