ok so this video shows where i'm at on it, and it works great :D

I have 3 microwave caps in parallel from the mot to the ladder off the side thats connected to the housing. (one of witch is from '73 and is the huge one, about the same rating though)

i used some old ceramic insulators for holding the forks, i'll get matching ones soon

the ladder is steel welding rod (oxy-acet)

*it will be put in a nice plexi-glass tube "home" when experimenting has completed*

let me know that you think i could so to make it (preform) better!

I found that if you use the straight metal that's meant for welding instead of wire then your arc will travel up the ladder at the same speed and it won't get caught. The antenna from remote control's or tv's would also probably work well, plus they collapse

You might consider binging the wire closer together t the bottom so it auto-ignites

@camp badger: the rods are a little over 3/16 inch. do you use something bigger? what do you mean metal thats meant for welding, do you mean round stock? like a metal dowel?

@magnet: it's an mot, to auto ignite it would have to be about 2mm apart, then it wouldnt rise. i would need something to step up the volts a little...
i would make a gabriels electrode but i dont think that would work with a jump of this far (and i don't have any resistors @ the moment

Could do what they do in some welders to start an arc; use an air core transformer to couple 10kV or so to the 2200V from the MOT. Very low current, but enough for a spark.

Sorry, I don't know the exact name, I used this stuff:
1307720393 3781 FT117384 Welding Metal 1

1307720393 3781 FT117384 Welding Metal 2

They look like welding rods or welding sticks

You can remove the flux using pliers or a vice. it is quite brittle.

I don't think they have flux or anything on them, they are just metal rectangular rods

yeah, the rods i'm using have no flux, just a thin layer of something to keep it from rusting... but that vaporizes in flame so i burn it off.

as for a voltage doubler, would one stand up to the constant arc of the mot? and if so, whats the best plans for one you've found?
