hand-winding a flyback

The trick with flybacks (apart from the usual capacitance/inductance problems) is getting the core gap correct.

There are formulae online (on manufacturers' websites, etc) but you need to be better at maths than I am to be confident that you get it right.

If you are using 'E' cores, or similar, the gap has to be ground, so trial and error isn't a straightforward process.

'C' cores can be gapped using plastic sheet, etc. so if to plan to find the correct core gap be trial and error, I'd suggest using 'C' cores.

Maybe others can comment on this point?

today started with mischief unfurled with spark-tinkering.

Why not shine your intellect onto ways of condensing electrical
activity using just force and insulators?

If you want to make cute little plasma displays in globes filled with assorted gases, voltage is not all that important; it turns out that it's really easy to get arc discharge, glowing colored streamers, and the like in noble gas fills smile

The problem is not so much winding, but vacuum potting to prevent breakdown.
