Boy of 13 earns £250,000 after inventing burglar-tricking doorbell

by Wendy Fuller,
Daily Mirror
6/06/2011

A BOY of 13 has invented a doorbell that tricks would-be burglars into thinking someone is home – and has signed sales deals worth £250,000.

Laurence Rook’s Smart Bell device calls the householder’s mobile phone so they can “answer” the caller via an intercom wherever they are.

The teenager, from Whyteleafe, Surrey, got the idea after his mum complained of missing deliveries. Smart Bell will cost £40 on the high street.

I'm not sure which is more stupid: the fact that people think that this would prevent burglaries, or that people paid that much money for the idea. Clever kid though, for building something like that at such a young age.

I don't get why this is amazing... It's a walkie talkie made out of a cell phone. :|

I don't get how it stops burglaries.
What kind of burglar rings a doorbell?

The kind that check to see if someone is home, and make something up if people answer. One time, a random guy rang the doorbell and when we did answer, he asked if we were selling the car that always sits in our driveway O_o

Yup. I once knew a teenager (crooked brother of my friend) who found another way to meet strangers in an apartment complex. Skip the doorbell, just try the doorknob. If it's unlocked, open door & step in. If someone's there, give a stupid excuse (e.g. "Is Tom home?") & take off.

It doesn't 'need' to stop burglaries.

If it's 'advertised' as stopping burglaries a lot of stupid, paranoid people will buy it.

As an aside, if you answer your phone to find the police at you're door, and you tell them you're not in......they'd get suspicious, even if you had nothing to hide! smile

Wouldn't the sound of ringing on the other end give something away?

I'm sure the intercom would connect after the person "answered the call"
