It's more wanting to belong to a group that you can identify with, like Funky said:

Nah, they're not nonconformists, they're just conforming to an alternative culture.

[edit] Er, I guess we aren't really talking about the same thing. Yeah, we have a name for those people: poseurs.

So...in conclusion, everyone is a conformist in one way or another, and there aren't any original ideas anymore?

Regardless, I like the mild punk/goth/noclassical motiff as well. Girls get quite a bit scarier than that if you want to risk googling up stuff from the BSDM community (which I want no part in)

Why is it that people that want be individuals and special often end up copying someone else completely? The second question is why they always fail to see the irony of it all.

Good point. If individuals, such as punks for example, are out to be non-conforming, than why do they all look and dress in the same fashion. A punk basically doesn't conform to society or any other standards except those imposed by the individual himself. However, you don't see people dressed up in 3-piece suits showing up for a TSOL concert. Seems to me, if you want to be punk, then you are forced to conform to their standards of dress, and if not, then you wouldn't be accepted.

Thats true. At least for the german punk scene. I think it's natures law, if you can't be part of a big group, make your own.

Selling counter-culture is very prevalent and ironically profitable -- tours of Burning Man are available now for only a minimal fee.

Actually it’s quite common for marketers to consult developmental psychologists in regards to structuring product lines for resistive markets and political sectors. Commonly for youth a conventional thought process and rapidly developing identity can alienate people from the community – the only Punks I can remember are now Lawyers, Accountants, and Government bureaucrats. One can’t win against the man -- as one becomes the man. Now that is a burn to think about when you go and get your tattoo of your ex-girlfriend’s name laser’ed off for your wife.

Yeah, it sure is profitable. The other day I sold gothic lolita and bought punk caberet and cyberpunk. I'm expecting their net worth to greatly increase by around 2009.

What I find highly Ironic is a bunch of geeks discussing who is hot, why they are hot, and why they are different to everyone else.

Am I the only one to find this amusing?

Another zinger from EVR!
With punks, think about this: they all look to non-punks like they're dressing the same, but they're all probably doing something they think sets them apart. Just like to punks all businessmen look the same, but businessmen notice things like suit and tie color, etc. that make them different from each other.
