I think I was put off from the norm by all the trendy types I have to interact with at school.
The way it seems to work is that the scarier they look, the nicer they are when you get to know them. I guess when you're different, it's natural to be a little understanding (note that this doesn't apply to wannabes). That and the obvious- they're hot.

Nah, they're not nonconformists, they're just conforming to an alternative culture. And there's nothing wrong with that! Alex is right, they are generally much nicer though there are a few exceptions.
