The sun is shining, the birds are singing and I have a headache. No zombies shambling about either. A beautifull day to have a hangover, so it's business as usual.

Trust all you guys to go shooting off prematurely. It's not due to happen until 6 pm - and if you took the trouble to read the small print, it says "Presence of Living Dead subject to local availability. Batteries not included."

Ash, yep, looks like you have proved it conclusively either way :) it is a version of the grandfather paradox which many people take as an argument that time travel must be impossible. In other words, if effects could happen before their causes as well as afterwards, the world as we know it couldn't exist.

The Grandfather Paradox was a major obstacle to overcome, as was the huge amounts of energy previously thought to be neccessary once the GP had been overcome.

Basically it was a question of breaking the GP down to fundamental principles for particles. The two fundamental principles upon which the GP is built are the Pauli exclusion principle, which generally states that no two particles can occupy the same point at the same time, but from which it follows that no one particle can occupy two points at the same time, and the principle of the conservation of energy.

This was causing problems until recent advances in antimatter technology, reported elsewhere on this forum, regarding the trapping and storage of anti-atoms, etc.

When reduced to the particle level, the GP states that you can't send a particle back because the same particle can't exist twice at the same time. This violates the cause and effect principles that you mentioned above. (There are also issues regarding conservation of energy)

but, to put it simply, if you can send an antimatter particle back to anniahillate a particle, then that same particle can then be sent back without the 'dual existence' problem. It's also been accepted for some time that antimatter travels backwards in time anyway, so this isn't really a problem. Also as all elemantary particles of the same type are identical, it's not essential to target individual particles, the particle that is anniahilated only has to be of the same type in order that the laws of the conservation of energy etc. are not violated, thus simplifying things further.

Also, because the huge amounts of energy released by the matter-antimatter anniahilation remain in the system, and increase the entropy of the system, this energy can be recycled, thus negating the need for a nuclear reactor to power the system as it becomes self sustaining. I'll go into more detail about this later, when I get to the flux capacitors.

The only remaining problem to be solved was how to accelerate the anti-matter back into our past (the antimatter's future), and also to send the matter back into the past. It'a a well known fact that stress can accelerate the aging process, people suffering from stress can age ten years in next to no time, and it doesn't just apply to people. (It's long been known that overstressing materials or components causes them to age prematurely). This is where the flux capacitors come in, along with the flux inductors and flux diodes (4HV'ers should be able to follow the theory involved more easily than other groups)

When the antimatter forms the core of an inductor, pushing the flux levels way past saturation induces stresses in the antimatter. This high stress level accelerates the aging of the antimatter, thus accelerating it into it's future (our past). The level of saturation can be increased still further by introducing a strong DC component, this is where the flux diodes come in. Also, if a resonant tank is constructed from the flux inductors and flux capacitors, this has a two-fold effect. The efficiency of the system can be increased further still, and the negative half of the cycle can be used to induce a negative flux in the matter to be sent back to replace the matter aniahillated by the antimatter. This 'negative flux' has the opposite effect of the positive flux described above, and reverses the aging process in the matter to be sent back, thus accelerating it into it's past (our past). (Also, by reversing the polarity of the flux diodes in series with the flux inductors, travel into the future is possible, but to keep things simple, I'll just describe travelling to the past here. Especially as the world id due to end at six o'clock)

Basically, this is achieved by the flux resonator circuit, which consists of two flux inductors, each with a series flux diode. These two inductor-diode pairs are then connected in parallel, but with the flux diode arranged in opposing directions. The flux capacitors are then connected in parallel to these, such that on one half cycle, the flux flows through one diode and inductor, and on the negative half cycle, flows through the other diode and inductor. This creates a huge DC component in each inductor, thus pushing the flux levels way past saturation and inducing huge stress levels in the antimatter on the positive half cycle, thus accelerating the aging process, and having the opposite effect on the matter during the negative half cycle.

If you require further clarification on any of the above points please ask.

Once I'd overcome the obstacles presented by the Grandfather Paradox the rest was fairly straightforward. You can see how it's only necessarry to replace the losses in the system, and that by re-cycling the energy produced from the matter-antimatter aniahillation, the whole system becomes very efficient. However, I'm having some problems with the efficiency of the flux capacitors at the moment. Their performance doesn't seem to match the spec sheets. Maybe I shouldn't have ordered the cheap ones from China I found on Ebay, and should have paid out for some from a supplier like Motorola or ST, but the express delivery was excellent, they actually arrived before I ordered them! wink

EDIT: I was hoping to have it finished by April 1st originally, to give me more time for testing. I've an hour left now til six o'clock......

On the way back from soaring a ridge in my paraglider, I ate a whole bag of such cookies, which made me so sick I had to stop the car, get out and puke 'em all up. Felt like the end of the world right there.....
