Well if it was proven true, my first question would be what would happen if she was in the presence of Xrays.

"...iPhones make [me] feel really sick within about 20 minutes of being near one..."

I think I may have this illness too.

I was in the toilet the other day and spotted a guy checking e-mail on his iPhone while relieving himself. Maybe he was eager for the latest tidbit from Wikileaks.

On the subject of silly advertising copy, Dyson claim of their latest brushless vacuum cleaner motors: "No carbon brushes for reduced carbon emissions". I guess this is literally true, but environmentally useless, since carbon brushes never turned into CO2 as they wore out in the first place.

A while back, whilst using the urinals, there was a bloke in there working on another one that was in bits and which he was unblocking with a screwdriver and a scraper.

Looking across at the poor sod, I commented that it must be a ghastly job.

"Has it upside",he replied...

"Like what"? I asked...

"Stops me biting my nails"....

I actually met someone who started similar symptoms, and guess what? She was a MRI technician at a hospital.
My dad was getting an MRI and she said it might be a few minutes. As I sat there and watched, we started talking. And eventually after discussing the machine and magnets somehow the topic of the effects of fields came up.
It turns out that slowly as she has been working with the machine she has been being affected by it. After several years of performing maintenance on it herself (which for the uninformed is often done with the 2 Tesla magnets still running) she started to Pass Out when the magnets turned up.

the similar case that Popular Science discussed, and linked to above by Camp Badger, was a similar case where the man worked literally right next to a VERY powerful transmitter for over ages. He currently resides in Switzerland, the only country that officially recognizes Electrosensitivity as a disease.

Personally, I cannot see reason why this cannot happen. Could it be a Plecebo/Hypocondriac situation? Yes. Does it have to be? No.

The main magnet isn`t really turned on and off very often though is it, and the gradient coils which ARE are very weak in comparison. Sounds like placebo effect to me.

Google "Mag Lag"... Seems that rapid head movements near >0.5T magnets can cause neurological effects.
The pulse timings have to be controlled because some patients can see flashing lights and worst case can have a fit if the timings are just right.

See Link2 WARNING, nuttiness on here.

also Link2

On the basis that intentionally stimulating the brain with magnetic pulses (aka TMS) can generate phosphenes, it makes sense that MRI scanners can cause some neurological effects in exceptional cases such as rapid head movements or high speed pulse inversions such as the newer T2 weighted sort.

I can certainly see how moving in the field can have an effect. What I mean though is that, as the field around the machine is almost identical wether it is in use or not, associating passing out directly with activating the machine seems like a mistake. It`s just the wording that makes it seem like jumping to a conclusion.

When passing out it isn't just from operating or being around it, it is up close (e.g: she also does their basic servicing of the machine, which requires being very close to, in in the center of, the magnets when testing things like field strengths etc).

Also note to Conundrum, this is an extremely powerful MRI by most standards (maybe an fMRI? not sure exactly what) but the magnets are rated at up to 4 Tesla

Again this is not her saying that any electric fields disturb her, this is up close and personal with the thing on full power. That's it, I was simply trying to find a case that was not in the extremes of no effect and full "I can't be near a cellphone" effect.

As an interesting aside, I went to visit the 7T magnet at university and saw an unbelievably cool demo where my tutor leaned his weight against an aluminium plate placed in mid-air across the field! It was one of the coolest things I`ve ever seen :o)
