Just stuff you get for free, or for a cheap price. I hear a lot about people who have a bunch of parts but they all sit in the basement or shelf collecting dust...
Maybe create a list of what you have? You could post them on here, and let everyone see what you have, and if someone needs something it'd be a lot easier to ask on here.
Just an idea! Similar to a junk box but a lot larger and easier to read!

Duck, I see where you are heading. At a point in time, when I was choking in parts, I took an interest in the ancient chinese philosophy, that of Feng Shui. The core of that doctrine is, that if you posess a piece of hardware, you will also harbour a desire to use it for something. Untill you do so, you will be disappointed. If you have a lot of hardware, you will soon be unable to act upon it, and you will be in a state of total dispair, because all these projects are calling for your attention, many of them you have forgotten, but they are still there, only now subconscious. The worst cases of this collectivemania can be seen far off in the landscape, cars, trailers, building materials for that porch, you name it. Feng Shui says: clear out your stores, and clear out your mind. If you really need a part, be confident that you will be able to get it. I guess it all boils down to us westeners being greedy and foolish, thinking that the parts are better lying in my celler than it the other joe's. So Ducky, why don't you make a list of what you think need, publish it and see. Perhaps someone will find relief in passing the monkey over to you!.

What do I DO with it? Usually it sits around in boxes until I get around to using it for something, like when I need a capacitor.
I would love to take part in the trading thing, but my dad hates interacting with people over the internet. I'll make a list up when I get home, if you really REALLY need something I have feel free to make an offer, (I would like some giant mosfets, [IRFP260N or similar {ZVS driver}]), but no gaurantees.

There is a certain psychological makeup that encourages hoarding. Having a sympathetic SWMBO is a great help...
Never paid very much for most of this stuff - just kept a watchful eye out for the "main chance" over many many years (lots of boot fairs, lots of auctions, lots of using contacts in differing fields who know what I'm like)...
At various times in my life I've collected: All sorts of stuff (edited to remove almost-OCD list of stuff that interests me...)
...and many many other things. House, workshop & now outbuildings full of stuff. Mad as a hatter. Sold some on eBay, but that just feels wrong.
I met a bloke in a restaurant in France once who summed it up well: He said that he dealt in vintage Bentleys - buying & selling them. Its just that he wasn't very good at selling them...
Its a type of obsession and has to be controlled. SWMBO reckons that if it keeps me quiet, its ok. I don't drink a lot or smoke & all. Nor do I play golf!
I give a lot away to folk in the UK & Europe. Then something else catches the eye...

Hobbyists of all kinds tend to collect stuff, the trick is to keep the useful or interesting stuff and get rid of the rest. I haven't mastered this trick yet. It seems that every time I have a clear-out I soon need something that I recently disposed of but the wonderful stuff that I keep (my wife just calls it junk) isn't needed yet...
the good news is that once I retire I have enough projects to fill another two or three lifetimes. Just hope I have the energy and enthusiasm.
As for cataloging my stuff .... what fun would it be if I actually knew what I've got and where I put it?
P.S. my 'filing' system is now stackable metal biscuit tins, ... soon to be labeled properly.

I created this thread to alleviate the hoarding problems for some hobbyists, and plus it helps people who need stuff!
The two things I need right now are just a filter capacitor and some perfboard, other than that, I'm set.
