Either get the absolute cheapest scope you can find, or get a rigol ds1052e for a bit under $400(its worth saving up for), which is a great scope that many members of 4hv have. The rigol ds1052e is a stand alone 50Mhz 2 channel scope with more features then you will ever need. It can even save waveforms to a USB drive and you can upgrade it to 100Mhz with a firmware hack.
The usb scopes are not worth the hassle in my opinion, and the decent ones can run the same price or as more as the rigol ds1052e.
If you really don't want to spend money on a scope get the cheapest working one you can find off eBay.

The tektronix 292 looks good as it comes with a manual, but manuals are probably available online for free for most of them. I'd check this first.
I'll try and post a couple of good links for these tomorrow.
If any have problems (the first one seems to have problems above 150 kHz, it's most likely to be soggy electrolytics. These can normally be sourced for free from TV's, monitors, etc, or are cheap enough new.
The one that hasn't reached the reserve price yet looks good, but we don't know what the reserve is.
The websites that specialise in vintage radio/tv stuff reccomend replacing ALL the electrolytics in these 'scopes, but use your common sense.
The chances are that even if you get one that doesn't work, you will only have to test the electrolytics, and replace one or two to fix it. No guarantees, though, but that is the usual cause of problems.
Don't just take my word for it though. I'm sure others will comment.
(Sulaiman might give some good advice, as might some others.)
EDIT: I bought one for £20 which was advertised as 'untested, but lights up when switched on' because it was local, and I could collect it. It has some problems above 150 khz (or maybe over 800kHz or 1MHz, I can't remember - I think it's over 800kHz that it becomes significant) on one channel, but this is probably due to a soggy electrolytic. The other channel is fine. I'll get around to testing/replacing the electrolytics when I need to.
EDIT EDIT: Sulaiman advised me that, as I had a circuit diagram, etc. I could use one channel to test the other channel. Brilliant advice!
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Mine is a European Tektronix (Telequipment D61a), two channel, 10 MHz, designed for testing TV's in the seventies.
