Hi Fulmen,

Well as I think using an SG3525 to drive a half bridge is hardly more complex than those NE555 circuits, the only real innovation being the GDT which in case of ignition coil drive can be two of those white transformers from old 56k modems.

A TL494 would perhaps need totem pole amplifying stages to boost it's output for higher frequency drive. (for ignition coils, pullup resistors might work too).

On other side you can get the TL494 from a dead PC power supply along with almost all other required parts; if you dissasemble some bigger supply you might even find things like SG3525 and mosfets.


I've recently experimented with using transformers from PC power supplies as HV sources; worked quite well with 1kW+ power and resulted in some fat arcs. With a voltage quadrupler those could actually be used to power a quite powerful DC resonant charged tesla coil - probably not a begginner project but I'd consider it if a NST was too hard/expensive to get.

I looked at half and full brigde circuits, but couldn't get them to work in spice. All I got from them was a sawtooth that didn't do any good. Guess I need to read up a bit on those.

On the other hand, my approach has produced some unexpected and useful discoveries. I recently looked at a current regulated PSU for anodizing, but the huge voltage range needed made for an awkward design with multiple LM337's to handle the power dissipation. Now I think I have a solution based on the 555 (cheap and easy to get hold of when I fry one). I'm beginning to understand what makes them so popular, they are versatile little buggers. It might not be the best solution, but there is something special about circuits you've designed all by yourself.

But by all means, keep up the good suggestions. I will probably need them once I start on larger tesla coils.
