I etch PCBs for everything now, even one-offs. Honestly once you get the hang of it, it's faster and much less error prone than trying to hand wire on perfboard. It's easier to replace parts if something fails, surface mount is no problem, and you can make ground plains if needed.
I used ExpressPCB for a bit, but later found KiCAD which is far superior and much less limited. Has a bit of a learning curve though, so ExpressPCB might be a better place to learn the basics.

I would, but I'm swamped right now. What I've been doing lately is finishing several layouts, then etching them all in one evening so I only have to get the stuff out and clean up once.
