Needless to say the first thing I did is locate the datasheet, and found the chip is stll current, see Link2 for someone else using one.

oh look, it's me in the comments section. Maybe I'll give my scanner unit another try.

James, pardon me for not making this clear. Conundrum and I are just planning to shine some nice light on the photoresist.

Sorry for the OT, but did you guys notice some of the videos that guy favorited? I didn't dare look at any, the titles alone were enough. ill

hm.

I am being sent some failed 445nm diodes which if the broken bond wires are patched up will be used for this project.

Seems that some of the time when they blow the diode survives but the bond wires on one or both sides open due to the sharp bends.

This particular repair technique was pioneered by someone on LPF and I am hoping to improve on this with the use of a custom jig and
3-D video setup based on webcams with scanner lenses.

EDIT:- Two COD'd 405's not 445's.
Oh well, I got one working at 5% of rated power so not completely useless.

EDIT:- picture of current 405nm scanner..
Link2

I also found that this particular scanner has a small lens for detecting the beam power, this can be repurposed as a start sensor.

I recall common photoresist materials have their peak sensitivity in the near UV up to 400nm which greatly deminishes towards 450nm.

Novolak sensitivity: Link2 it seems that the sensitivity at 400nm is better than at 450nm by a factor of 3.

405nm diodes are dirt cheap, you might get better results with one of those, and not nearly as much power is needed.

So far so good.

I've dismantled the polygon assembly and attached wires, it spins nicely and completely stable for a change.
This particular module has a sense output pair which is a track on the PCB, and an enable line.
The chip can have its speed adjusted by varying the bias to one of its pins, but I doubt I will need to do this as long as my RAM chips can keep up smile

Confirmed that the losses are 91.7% due to the AR coating on this mirror, but this is substantially better than the plastic optics before so it is still doable.
I have a spare uncoated polygon mirror which is intact.

Anyone know how to nuke infrared AR coatings on aluminium mirrors? smile

I repaired laser diodes by resoldering bonding wires way before 445nm diodes were here...

the best repair was an opnext 150mW 642nm diode at 120€... I was pretty happy it worked

there's no need of special camera setup etc... a simple binocular is way enough

Why do something pratical and boring like use a pen when you can use a quote on quote "lazer"...

(It's a Dr. Evil thing....)
