I wound a secondary specifically for my version of Steve Ward's SSTC5. Gotta say I'm very pleased with the performance of this thing. I still need to cap off the secondary form and add a proper discharge terminal but overall I'd say this works very well. I get sparks very similar to those of the VTTC although drawing around 450W this is significantly more powerful. I think I'll change the heatsink to something more compact since it doesn't even get warm, it could run all day long.

you mean 120V? I might build one of these, looks like a quick project, Do you think you could wind a larger primary and power it off a flyback? because I can do that in like an afternoon...

When you rectify and filter 120VAC you get 170VDC. 120V is the RMS of a sine with a peak to peak value of 170.
You can't power it off a flyback, completely different principal here. It's a semi resonant design that picks up the RFI with a little antenna wire and uses that feedback to drive the primary at the resonant frequency of the secondary. The mosfets directly switch the primary voltage and there's quite a bit of current involved.

Okey Dokey Could an isolation transformer be used before rectification, or would that limit the power too much? (HV hobbyist fears death by 120/170V :P)
