Hey, we had a big assembly at school today because the "Bath Salt usage is spiraling out of control." Of course the whole presentation was realistic scare tactics, basically just telling us that if you choose to do these drugs you might die... cheery. But they didn't know why or how, so I am wondering if anyone knows why they might kill you, for example: what exactly causes your body to shut down or for you to lose control?

For medical specifics , see (Goggle search) "Research Chemicals, analog drug use, application".
They don't need to "scare" you. If you know the composition and actions of the CNS and specific organs; you know they are essentially ingesting potential poison. Only a serious idiot would use Research Chemicals. The effects. actions on the CNS and individual organs are as varied as the chemical, dosage, route of administration, & conditions......There is no way to predict what would happen other than it's a serious gamble with potential results being damage & possible coma / death.

Precursors and analog drug sales have been around for a long time. The technique (in generality) is that the body had certain conditions that provide exposure to other chemicals (the stomach has an acidic condition, etc) so that a chemical need only be a step away from the drug of abuse [and thus, theoretically, legal]. This had been done with everything from steroids to MMDA. It's also a SERIOUS gamble becasue the body is not as exacting as lab conditions and in general there are NO controls over dosage, quality, adulterants, etc. It's worth taking seriously.

It's hard to say exactly because everyone reacts a little bit differently, and the dosage is not very well controlled. Stimulants can cause people to behave in strange ways, especially after the euphoria passes and the depressing crash sets in. I've always thought these scare tactics were a bit silly because they're usually overly dramatic and overstate the risk, but I would stay away from that stuff myself. Weed is not gonna kill you, but you never know what's in some bag of chemicals sold as bath salts.

If someone really wants to fry their brain, they're gonna find a way no matter what is banned or what people tell them, but I'm sure not about to snort an unknown chemical cocktail.

#1 I hate these scare campaigns because they always label marijuana as a "gateway drug" (a theory that has been disproved many times). They also say that a joint is more carcinogenic than a cigarette, but what they leave out is the fact that you don't smoke an entire "pack" of joints in a day leading to a much lower overall carcinogen intake.

Considering there has never been a recorded overdose of marijuana, and considering that people OD on booze all the time it would seem that MJ is much safer than Alcohol or tobacco, yet you don't see schools advertising that do you? I also believe that these campaigns actually contribute to drug use due to the forbidden fruit factor.

#2 These research chemicals are not only more expensive and more toxic than MJ, they are also not as good as the real stuff. I suggest avoiding "bath salts" at all costs.

Well yeah, I have no intentions of doing either drug but you bring up a good point. Although having another prohibition would lead to the same results as the first one and making MJ legal is not plausible riight now because so many people are against it for whatever reason; most of them ill-informed.

Booze is bad. As a manager I've had to deal with it. But about 16
years agp I retrained as a teacher. Part of the requirement was a practicum in a high school in the third year of the program. The
university had to add this for licensing, although I wasn't to be a high school teacher.

Until you teach a class of kids, and see the ones who are
stoned on pot, but functional, you cannot know what this stuff does to mark those out from the others.

The high school teachers can smell it on their clothes. I couldn't.

I've worked with a number of stoners, and they're not particularly useful or pleasant people to have around. But I have to agree with the other comments in this thread, if you absolutely must try some illegal drug, weed is probably your safest bet, as opposed to some synthetic crap with God knows what in it.

Well I would argue that stoners are the same as alcoholics. I don't smoke it myself, I have a handful of times but found it a bit boring but I know a lot of people who do from time to time without being stoners. Likewise, I might drink a few beers with my friends on a Friday night but that doesn't make me an alcoholic. If you abuse any mind altering substance by consuming too much of it too often, it will have a negative impact.

Sensible people wouldn't get drunk every day or drink a few beers on the way to work or school and the same applies to weed. No doubt about it, productivity falls in the toilet for those who do.

Ha, a Minnesotan guy gave up every food except beer for lent; he says he makes frequent trips to the doctor. Although he has lost 22 pounds so far... probably not a good idea

Well I suppose living off beer is better for you than living off weed, but I wouldn't personally recommend either!
