I've just been shown the original article.

Here is a link:

I was asking if this is plausible, I wasn't saying I believe it to be correct.

I wont use CFLs any more unless its a stand alone fixture that is only on when some one is in the room with it (reading lamp etc). I have had a few fail with sparks and smoke (3 of my one 2 at a friend's place) and I don't trust them so much.

As far as the light, its a nuisance to me when I try to shoot video at 300fps or higher because there is a very noticeable flicker that isn't as prominent in incandescent lights.

Come to think of it, how come they don't make a bulb which is just a string of UV LEDs without encapsulation mounted on a metal core PCB, inside a glass/phosphor mix tube which is filled with mineral oil as coolant for the hot diodes?

Best of both worlds, looks nearly identical to CCFLs but doesent have the toxicity problems and with a slight modification can run on 240,110 AND low voltage with full dimming capability.

Plus the UV emission from LEDs is a lot less dangerous than the 253.7 and 339nm from mercury if the bulb is damaged..

This might work, I've heard of some manufacturers using liquid cooling on industrial sized LED panels.

Got this idea when taking apart an old LCD panel which had those strips of diodes as backlights, even one is 40% brighter than a 1W Luxeon at 30mA.

I'm of the opinion it will soon be all HBLED's anyway. There is currently a lot of development going on in this area, and the price is coming down.

There are still some pretty nasty chemicals used in the LED's though, if I remember correctly, arsenic, etc.

GaN is not toxic, IIRC arsenic is only used for red direct emission.
White LEDs normally use an inorganic phosphor for the red emission which is non toxic.

I did read somewhere that InGaN based diodes can be "zapped" back to life if they go short, although the efficiency tends to be lousy afterwards.
With a constant current and parallel resistors on each diode even multiple failures should be a non issue as the bulb just loses overall brightness.

Have seen shorted diodes on commercial bulbs before and the remaining LEDs tend to turn into DEDs in short order.
