The gas prices must make you even more proud to be a biker, Dr Spark. I really need to get a class M license after this BS 6 month waiting period to get my class C license. Texas won't stop changing the laws regarding licenses

My recollection is that there are about 3.7 Liters in 1 US gallon.
I don't like price increases any more than the next guy, but it always amazes me the amount of stink it causes when prices go up a bit. So I pay $50 instead of $40 to fill my car every few weeks, so what? I'll easily spend more than that on parts toys and other "junk" I don't need on ebay.
While the US is far larger and more spread out than many parts of the world, resulting in the need to drive a lot more to get anywhere, it's not like we haven't had any warning that prices would go up, so I'm not very sympathetic towards folks who bought gigantic fuel thirsty vehicles just a few years back.
On the plus side, when prices go up, it makes the usually horrible traffic around here just a bit better. Maybe if they hit $5 it'll be that psychological barrier where more people will stay home and I can actually get somewhere. If they go beyond that, it might spur some serious development of viable mass transit, something where we really lag behind much of the world.

You bring up a very good point James! I am excited to see what new things will be built to compete with rising gas prices.
On another note, I think countries should start conserving their oil because, until a new energy source is found that is better than oil, oil will be worth a lot in the future! Personally I think the US is not drilling into their reserves yet because if they wait until everyone else drains their oil reserves then the US could potentially become a superpower overnight and would be able to pay off all their debts.

Another issue with oil is that fuel is not the only use by far, in fact someone once said that oil is far too valuable to be burning it as a fuel. Nearly everything we use has oil as an ingredient, plastics, synthetics, lubrication, sealant, surface finishes, cleaners, solvents, almost everything. If it doesn't use oil as an ingredient, then you can bet oil was used somewhere in the manufacturing, processing, or transportation of the goods.
I'm sure there are many reasons we aren't drilling all of our oil reserves now, but my general thought is if you think prices are bad now, just wait 10 or 20 years and we'll be fondly remembering back when gasoline was "only" $5 a gallon. To use up our reserves now seems a bit like eating up your emergency food rations because you'd rather buy a new toy than go to the grocery store.
Not to mention the recent price increases are as much due to speculative investing in oil futures than supply and demand alone.
