Beach pebbles often tend towards natural dispersal patterns under the influence of gravimetric separation.
This could mean that the presence of occasional dense 'particles' higher up the beach might indicate an enriched layer of dense material in lower strata.
I find BNFL's use of the word 'particle' disingenuous. Does this mean a single alpha particle, or a great lump of half digested fission products?
As for lost or vanished uranium, there are a number of examples of this, ranging from the disappearance of 560 tons of yellowcake in 1968, ,9171,914952,00.html to the theft of 200 lb of highly enriched uranium from the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation in the so-called 'Apollo Affair' of 1965, both of which crimes have been attributed to Israel.

Yes, "WTF" sums the Dounreay situation up nicely. Until very recently it was a government owned site, so couldn't be prosecuted.
Dounreay was the test bed for the UK's breeder program and fuel cycle. The fuel rod fragments are swarf from the hot machine shop where the cans were machined off the spent fuel rods before reprocessing. Sometimes they got a bit enthusiastic with the lathe and scraped off some fuel along with the can.
I have no idea what happened to the 375lbs of uranium. You are welcome to come and look for it if you don't mind being shot at by armed police.
Many years ago I did some work at Windscale (as it was then) concerning emergency planning for accidental radioactive iodine releases.

Do you mean they seized private property, made it there own, and thus have no legal liability because its their's now? We have this same kind of legal trickery here in the US.

Ok, but how did the swarf escape the machining area and end up in the ocean?, they must have sprouted legs and jumed into a drain pipe.
