Thanks for the replies, I will try it on a dc supply tomorrow.

So its running on dc now. Just a small part of the double coil was glowing at 40 mA. Baking at 80 mA right now, about half of the coil was glowing but the "active area" decreased somewhat after a while.

Well, I'd guess that much of the neon has migrated into the glass through years of use.

I ran it at maximum rated current (40 mA) overnight and now more than half of the spiral is glowing. Would some high current pulses (eg. a cap discharge) help bring it back to life or will I just damage it this way?

Diagnosis: Your tube is suffering from gas clean up - over time the neon has become adsorbed and absorbed onto/into the glass and metal architecture - a common but gradual failure mode in gas discharge devices.

With a return to active service, some of the neon trapped at the gas-solid interface has been set free.

I would suggest patience and continuous operation at 40mA for three days to see if more gas can be liberated at the datasheet ratings.

If this prolonged period of 'normal' operation does not improve the glow geometry, then perhaps you could try more extreme measures.

In addition to the issue that PM mentions, you may be seeing "cathode poisoning" - something that is regularly seen in older nixie tubes (which are also cold-cathode penning-mixture filled tubes). The visual effects you describe are very similar - the cause & treatment are described on the page below:
