I've used cheap pp "Tupperware" syle containers from the Dollar Store for quick projects that needed to be thrown together in a short time period for a quick electrical test. pp (polypropylene) does not deteriorate while in contact with mineral oil, and so it can hold your oil-baptised projects for centuries. The only problem with pp is it's difficult to glue. (I told Grenadier about a good glue for pp made by 3M, but it's unfortunately very expensive).
If you can afford to spend a few bucks for an industrial-strength container for your projects, then Jame's suggestion of using a plastic electrical enclosure is an excellent one. The boxes that are rated NEMA 5 are liquid tight when sealed, and you can easily drill holes through them for feed-through terminals.

I've considered using one of those acrylic canisters used for food storage. They seem to be relatively sturdy, relatively inexpensive, and hermetically sealed.

I took a look at the box, I used, it's a Cantex junction box, I think mine is the 6"x6"x6" internal size but they offer a whole selection. They're not particularly cheap but not obscene either.
Here's some on ebay, I think I paid a bit less but I actually bought it a few years before I ended up using it for something.

Well I found this little bucket and put the XRT in there, it worked out pretty well.
I used to have another identical x-ray head from which I got this transformer from, but my father being the derp that he is tossed out the head I did not tear apart and kept the empty shell of the one that I did. I doubt I'll ever find another matching transformer...
