Which one should I get? This is for the low voltage side of Steve's SSTC 5 mini. Link2 or Link2 the first one the little transformer is only like and 1 by .5 inch which seems to good to be true. Plus it has a PCB mounting style :) the second one looks just like a wall adapter which i might just get for the sake of neatness but I would like your input.

Thanks

I was just looking at caps and was wondering is 420uf enough to filter the 60hrz buzz? I thought that if it want filtered enough it would kill or hurt the Fet's. Link2

Edit: what is the value of the snub cap across the NE555 pin 1 and pin 2? Link2

Edit: what are the values of R3 and R4, they both say R5

Edit: what is the value of the snub resistor after D11?

R3 and R4 say 5R, that means 5 Ohms, typically European nomenclature but it's easier than figuring out how to type an Omega symbol. You will probably still have some 60Hz buzz, that won't hurt anything though.

The resistor and capacitor say sub, as in substitute, not snub. There's a chart on Steve's page about the coil that lists the characteristics of the sparks that he observed plugging each value in those locations. I thought I might use a rotary switch to select different values for the capacitor but I haven't decided yet.

As for transformers, don't you have something to salvage one from? I don't think I've ever actually bought a new transformer, I save all the ones from old junk I tear apart.

thanks for clearing up the resistor thing. ok i will check out the chart for the caps. I have transformers but not at high enough voltage.

You can wire the secondary of two transformers in series to get more voltage. A 12V transformer might produce enough to work fine there too, especially if it's a larger one. You could also use a voltage doubler built with a pair of diodes and electrolytic capacitors to boost the voltage, I don't think the average current draw of that circuit is more than 100-200mA.

OK i will see what i can find. Radio shack sells a 22v xformer at 450ma and i think the other is 12v at 450ma

I would say go with the 12V one, it's probably gonna be closer to 15V after the rectifier and filter. Look up the max rating of the ICs to make sure you don't exceed that.

It's neatly constructed, there's no way to tell the core characteristics from a photo though. If you have or know someone with an oscilloscope you can find out. You want nice clean square drive to the mosfet gates at the frequency of interest.

Can the SSTC 5 mini( Link2 filter cap for the 120v be bigger than 420uf? It seems to me that there would still be a buzz. Could that end up hurting anything or making unwanted sound? I was looking at the table of variables for the sub points and was wondering what would be the best way to switch those out easily? Any ideas?
