Get a pair of polarised sunglasses and another piece of polarised film. The glasses should block UV and reduce brightness a little, but you also have the option of using the extra sheet of polariser rotated to give a variable degree of brightness reduction. I wouldn't rely on it for long term use in case it leaks dangerously at invisible wavelengths, but it's very handy for a quick look at arcs. (As a bonus, you can use this combination to view stress patterns in plastics and glass too).

I suppose low powered flyback driver just produce a violet colour, and very higher input wil produce eye killing UV light, just get some good UV filtering sun glasses. Because if you look at the arc constant it WILL damage your eye, and they will get inflamed (arc eye)
