If you mean a 9 Volt battery, the sort commonly called a transistor radio battery, those are not very useful for anything of this nature. They just can't supply much current. If you use any sort of battery, you'll want it to be rechargeable. Everyone working with electronics should have at least one bench power supply though, and building one is a great beginner project. Some of the very first things I ever built were power supplies made from scavenged parts.
