The original 1932 Cockcroft and Walton experiment involved using a (~400kV I think) multiplier to accelerate protons into lithium.
They obviously had to invent the CW multiplier to achieve it.
The main problems, as I pointed out in my first post in this thread, are the insulators/HV feedthroughs.
The rest is no more complicated than your average 'schoolboy fusor', with an ion source.
