It is inconceivable that the full magnitude of the disaster was not discovered within hours.

Even if all the numerous CCTV cameras, and sensor arrays of a nuclear installation had failed, then remote control robots of the sort used in explosive ordnance disposal would have been deployed immediately.

We were assured that the disaster was completely trivial compared with Chernobyl - but now Chernobyl stands alone as the benchmark against which Fukushima can be measured.

The only thing that is very clear about this calamity is its media management - the very gradual release of information so as not to panic the markets into dumping Japanese stock, or bring about the cancellation of multi-billion Euro orders for nuclear materials and technology, as has now happened in Germany, and Italy.

They said at the time that they couldn't use existing robots due to the stairs, etc.

I agree with the rest of your points, though.

Once a witness has been shown to be unreliable, as Tepco has, trying to guess what is true and what is not is a fool's errand. But we can say that current models of remote control hazmat robots such as the iRobot 510 Packbot can climb stairs and open doors, and wouldn't be much good if they couldn't. And yes, there are underwater variants too. Link2

Drone Aircraft At Fukushima Plant Loses Control, Lands On Reactor Building

Link2

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--A small 8.2 kilogram drone aircraft gathering data from heavily damaged areas of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant lost control Friday and landed on the roof of the No. 2 reactor building, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) said.

The vehicle, known as a T-Hawk, is about 20 centimeters in diameter and looks like a small jet pack. It is used primarily by the military for reconnaissance work in dangerous areas. It has been used at Fukushima Daiichi since mid-April to assist in damage assessment.

The company said there didn't appear to be any damage from the impact of the vehicle, with no fire or smoke observed following the accident. It wasn't known if the vehicle was damaged in any way.

Tepco spokesman Junichi Matsumoto said that due to its small size and weight, the drone is "unlikely to crash through the rooftop and damage the reactor."

Tepco said it may attempt to retrieve the unit using a long crane.

The No. 2 unit is the only one of the four reactors to retain its roof following explosions at units 1, 3 and 4 that destroyed much of their outer buildings.

Tepco is undertaking a nine-month project to bring the heavily damaged reactor units under control following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

I do not have enough knowledge to judge the dangers caused by the Fukushima events
but the thing that really angered me was our (UK) nuclear 'experts' on BBC etc. following the events, virtually ALL of them said it was a minor incident, nothing to concern ourselves with, our nuclear programme will continue etc. etc..
Until now I have been pro nuclear (anti fossil fuel) but it's obvious that our 'expert' nuclear scientists are not trustworthy, either they are liars or incompetent,
- in either case I have lost faith and have changed my mind
... nuclear scientists and politicians can't be trusted when they obviously have hidden nuclear agendas.

I'm so annoyed that I'm asking members to post youtube clips of the 'scientists' that lied to us for future reference, uk, us etc. I myself have none yet though I'm going to start looking.
Can someone suggest a generic title for such clips that would 'link' then together for others to easily find? e.g. UK 'experts' lying about Fukushima 1 , 2 ,3 etc.
