As Steve Mconnor said. Its hard to create a solution from some part of the world, then apply it equally well throughout
For HVDC the world is a small place, there are some geopolitical problems with that ... but technically the solution only has to work in a small part of the world.

The geopolitical problems are no worse than that other energy resource we all know and love. If anything better, as the USA, the world's no. 1 energy glutton, has huge sunny deserts in the south.

The real problem is just money. HVDC lines are expensive, mostly on account of the converter stations, and so are millions of acres of solar collectors. Oil and uranium are still cheaper, though you could argue that oil has an unfair subsidy as the wars fought to secure it are funded out of the taxpayer's pocket. If these costs were brought into the equation, renewables might look a lot more attractive, but the defence industry lobby will probably make sure that never happens.

And there is the proverbial solar powered night light issue, requiring a 10,000 mile HVDC extension cord.

That's the thermal part of solar thermal, need to even out production over longer time span, add more thermal storage.

Of course you would keep gas or coal as a backup as well.

It sounds like they've finished running power lines to the plant and are preparing to try bringing the cooling systems back online. The spraying of seawater also seems to have brought the temperature of the spent rods to below 100C, so things are looking good.

I will withhold my belief in the rods being cool enough, givin the talking-head coward media, and lies from the upper TEPCO people.

If the pictures of the water spraying are a true reflection of what is going on, I find it difficult to understand how it could have done much in the way of cooling at the bottom of the mountain of scrap metal.

But the spray would prevent some particulates from escaping into the atmosphere, and assist in the reflux condensation of possibly contaminated steam making its way up through the scrap metal.

Some of the claims made by the author are at odds with the prevailing Linear No-Threshold Hypothesis (LNT) and go back to the safe level doctrine beloved of reactor owners and atomic testers.

Phrases like "Lowest one year dose clearly linked to cancer risk: 100mSv" invite us to ask what 'clearly' means, and recall the evasions of the tobacco industry when confronted with the statistical association between smoking and lung cancer.

Ebay UK is having a nuclear panic bonanza, with the usual load of old military and civil defence rubbish going for three or more times the usual prices paid for GM detectors.
