I wouldn't put any reqs on the power supply, I would quite like to see someone get a offline or multiplied mains driven coil... I would just say that it has to spark at least 10% the length of its secondary, with at least a 50% duty cycle. The one with the smallest volume (calculated as the smallest cube the coil coult fit with no parts hanging out, save for the power cord which will run off 120v or 240v mains) wins.
But, be very cafeful as the worlds smallest sstc thread had more flames about reqs than did posts about coils...

meh, they're supposed to look like that Actually the tube is still doing fine after a few hours of run time, however the mot I was using (pretty big one, probably from a 1.5kw microwave) was smoking enough to set off my smoke alarm after 1/2hr of running even with 2 fans blowing on it. I am not sure if it was because it was saturating (using 1/2wave rectification) or just too much power being sucked through it (she draws almsot 15 amps!) but I need to build a stataco for it. Or tune it better...I also want to go back to a voltage doubler on the mot (That was working fine with 2 811a's in parallel, but when I switched over to 1 it was too much for it)

I never thought this thread would be so popular. Since there seems to be some interest I'll make some rules, and you can start competing.
Rules are what Shawn proposed.
ShawnLG wrote ...
1. It must be a tesla coil (air core resonance) driven by a vacume tube(s) of choice. 2. The VTTC must be able to break out a secondary arcs or corona discharge.
Coils are to be judged on total size and breakout. Total size not including the power supply, but everything else used to make it run. Otherwise everything else is allowed. In a ?month? or so we can vote for best coil, something like Steve Conner's Ambient Energy LED lighting contest My thread, my rules, and any discussion of the rules is off-topic so don't waste time on it.

I would be willing to build a neato trophy for the winner.
The prize will be provided by Vaxian if he stills wants to make one. You're free to join in on the coiling too, Vaxian.
Peter already has a head start so get started! Let the coiling begin!

You can achieve breakout with a 6146. Brett Miller got 1.5" from a 3C24 (looks very similar to the last tube in the Ch r's last post) He did this with just a mockup of junk jumpered together across a desk. I imagine much better results can be gotten with experimentation.
Uh, try to keep that in context Dan, I was not trying to make sparks with that setup...I did not even tune or have any taps on that experiment...I was mainly just testing out those surplus little micas I got from you. I think you could get 5 or 6 inches with such a tube (3c24) with the proper design. It looks like Chris Hooper has tooled up for such a thing already. My advice on the 3c24 would be to make sure and tune at less than full voltage. That plate cannot handle being in the bright orange/yellow-white temperature for very long. It will melt eventually.

I got my VTTC working but no light. There is so little voltage developed in the secondary that it will not light up a neon bulb when touch againts the topload. It is not possible to make a coil break out in CW mode with very little power. The secondary will not go to waste, I really had winded it for my mini SSTC. At least I now know the resonance frequency required when designing it.
