I think I'd have to travel about 50 miles and 30 years. But, if I only want AC128 then the answer is about 4 miles I think.

SSI Sutton, 20 minute drive (on a good day) from me, you can even download their stocklist from here Link2

Display electronics, used to have a high street shop which closed, but you can visit their warehouse, mainly surplus and the owner can be a bit "tricky" to deal with IME Link2

A fair bit further away is Cricklewood Electronics Link2 They've diversified into CCTV but still hold fair stocks of components.

I used to have a few great shops very near me, one was what looked like a general hardware shop but in the basement he also ran a small electronics assembly firm with his own PCB production line, I only found it by chance when I went in to buy some screws smile Another was a semiconductor supplier who I could ring up and if they were about to close he would put my stuff behind the dustbin and tell me to stick the cash through the letterbox, the last one was a TV repair place who would sell me components from their own stock or order them for me from their trade suppliers (this was when I was still at school and didn't have my own R.S account smile ) all long gone now though frown . I still drive past this place regularly, now purely an audio supplier but they still have the hording up from when they supplied components Link2,or.&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

That would be Dave F***er (and no, those "*"s don't cover up a rude word).

I had some odd visits to Display Electronics years ago. One of the most unhelpful & expensive places I ever went to.

The part of London its in, Thornton Heath Link2, is notorious as it was (and may still be) the home to some of London's nastiest gangsters.

I knew a female social worker who used to be based there - she was stabbed by a 9 year old - eventually she moved down to near where I live now as this area "has a better class of problem" and when she sits down on someone's sofa, she is unlikely to catch anything....

Ahhh.. Happy days... (note I am ex "saarrrfff" London as well)
