Flash has sound lagging behind video (thanks Macromedia's Linux department)

That's fixable, though. At least, it was for me.

I don't mind embedded flash video... I'd certainly rather see that than something ghastly, like an embedded .wmv. However, direct links are definitely preferred.

...but if WMV will play then the MPEG4 ones will play too. I mean, I've watched divx encoded movies on my 266mhz machine.

I often have problems with my MPEG4 files not playing on alot of windows boxes, yet .wmv does just fine. The problem is my software doesnt let me adjust anything (resolution/quality) with wmv so its really low qual.

For example, here is a short movie clip that I designed and animated. Who can play it? Movie Its 4.37MB, mpeg4, 640x480 30fps, 4sec long. It will not play on the work computers which have XP Pro Version2002 w/SP1. But it will play on my friends computer with XP Home, although I am guessing he has downloaded additional codecs.

Probably a codec issue. There are alot of MPEG4 based (keyword being based) codecs available, such as DivX, XviD, etc and unless you have those installed a plain jane MPEG4 codec wont work.

Still, not a fan of WMV since it is crappy on nonwindows systems.

The only format that gets close to working everywhere is MPEG-1. If you get a high quality encoder it is quite usable. Most open source encoders are very bad.

It is encoded with DivX 5 and will only play if you have that codec installed.

Another issue I have with wmv is that atleast on my system it seems like it has to cache it or something, because there is always a delay when opening it up or clicking to a different time.
That is because each frame is dependent on the frames before it, if there are few keyframes then the problem is worse. It is possible to have more keyframes at the expense of compression ratio. Some player like VLC media player will let you jump to anywhere without delay with the sacrifice of a few seconds of broken video before it hits a keyframe,

Thats odd since I specifically do not use the divx codec although it is an option. For some reason when I use divx it slows the frame rate to 20FPS from the 30FPS original format but yet still plays all the frames so it has the effect of slowing the movie by 33% and making it 33% longer. Unless I used a different program to do it... can't remember for sure now since its been a while.

The FOURCC in the file is DX50 and it is used by DivX.
