It is not true that a decent smaller SGTC can't be made from 1 MOT: From the parts in a microwave oven, you can make a half wave doubler. This way you get around 6 kV peak. Ballast the MOT on the primary side with a fluorescent tube choke.

Okay, just reread your post and noticed this is your first Tesla coil you are building.
DO NOT - I REPEAT DO NOT USE A MOT.
As Dr. Isotop stated, MOTs are dangerous. I do not recommend them to anyone. They should be treated with as much respect as pole transformers and certainly not suitable for anyone building their first Tesla coil. These things are LETHAL.
If you get shocked by a NST you will likely live to see another day. If you get shocked with a MOT - you may not.

Okay, not sure what you mean by "tricks", but I wouldn't be doing any type of tricks with a MOT based coil. If you're pulling arcs or what have you and you get a primary to secondary arc, you can have the full output of the MOT in the secondary arc. Not good!
For a first Tesla coil - I would recommend a 12kV/30mA or 15kV/30mA NST. These can be picked up on EBAY inexpensively and work well with simple static or sucker gaps.
