Can I use MOSFET or TO-247 IGBT to build a small DRSSTC?

If my IGBT don't have internal diode, should I connect one on C.E pin?

Yes.
Freewheeling diodes are a must, make sure that it is as close as physically possible to the IGBT.

What diode should I use? Should I use ultrafast diode?

Yes.

It might be more practical to find an IGBT with a built-in diode (they usually have a D at the end of the part number).

I found TVS diode after visiting several stores.

I now decide to build steve's DRSSTC.5

What is the voltage rating of the 10uF cap on the half bridge?

I also found that the 20A 1KV diodes and 1000uF(several hundred volt) cap are relatively big and expensive. If I use 220uF cap and smaller diode(1KV 6A),will it work? What I want to build is a very small DRSSTC.

Luca- The voltage drop does rise somewhat proportionally, but by a very small factor. For example, in this datasheet Link2 the voltage varies from .5V to 4V in saturation... which is a small enough change where we can consider it constant. (4V @ 600A equates to .0067 ohms, whereas .5V @ 10A equates to .05 ohms, so the voltage drop is much more constant than the on resistance)

As for the TVS, I feel that they are very important. Many experience total failure soon after a blown TVS. I'd suggest using an equivalent voltage and power TVS elsewhere if you cannot find that specific model.

Hi guys,

One thing regarding the failure of the TVS - if they are just placed in parallel to igbt, they could conduct significant amount of current when the bridge goes off due to being parallel with igbt diodes, and die. I actually think this is by far most likely to cause unexpected tvs death, so if you are using only one or two TVS's I'd either add a reverse diode in series with them or use bi-polar TVS.

Just throwing this here:
the 1.5KE series everyone loves has several ones available.
the suffixes ending with CA are indication for bipolar (that and the diode itself has no white stripe.)
I personally like those better then the unipolar ones for that reason.

Well, I don't use TVS either for the same reasons as Goodchild stated. I've built two DRs and had no IGBT failures at all.

If your DR is well tuned, the current in the diodes will be quite low and you can use smaller ones. But 2A seems a bit too small. It is really better to get IGBTs with diodes built in.

ST Microelectronics offers free samples of TO-247 IGBTs with internal diodes. If you tell them you're working on a Tesla coil project, they will probably send you several for free.

The best ones to order would probably be the STGW40N120KD IGBTs - they're rated for 1200V at 80A, come in packs of 7, and have been tested to work in my coil.

I hope that helps!
