I'm using 15V half watt zeners in my Mazzilli driver and they don't even get warm, even when the input is pushed as high as 50V. As for things failing, such is the nature of HV circuits where we are pushing components to the ragged edge, sometimes they break. If your power supplies are failing, why not build one? Then if it breaks you will know how to fix it. Sometimes there is no substitute for a good brute force linear power supply. Find a big transformer, old UPS's for computers are a good source. Add a rectifier, filter capacitors, and a series pass regulator with a beefy transistor, TVS diode across the output and you'll have an almost bulletproof power supply. For a lot of things you don't even need the regulator.

actually they do have the advantage that they are cheap and easily obtainable. Handy if you want lots of amps at low voltage, just rewind it with welding cable. -A #include "anyone_want_a_cheap_fried_CCD_camera.h"

Do you have craigslist in your area? I posted on there a while back looking for old microwaves and had a dozen of them within 4 days, someone even delivered 3 of them. I had to pull the ad before it expired. UPS's can be had the same way, it's often cheaper to buy a new one than it is to get a replacement battery for an old one. You might also check out the freecycle forums on yahoogroups, I've found and disposed of quite a bit of stuff on there too. Also look for e-waste recycle events. I took some stuff to one once and had to wait around for another truck to arrive since the first one was full. I asked if I could take some stuff from the mountain of computers and other equipment and the guy said sure. I could have come home with several truckloads of stuff but promised myself I wouldn't take home more than I brought! Millions of tons of this stuff is available for the taking if you know where to look.
