I would say 3-5mm apart. you should get about 500 windings on each pancake if you are using #40 wire. be sure that you test the thing at low boltage and then soak in oil or wx.

I mention this in another thread similar to this one, as an idea I had based on dielectric strength test done by Terry fritz (it's buried in the archives somewhere) about polyurethane varnish at aroun10layers or so can with stand something like 50-75KV, so why not treat each layer of your coil as a tesla coil secondary, coat it with a several applications of poly, then wind the next layer and repeat.

Read the archives, there is masses of discussion on DIY flyback designs.
The two main problems are breakdown between layers, and excessive self-capacitance leading to a self- resonant frequency that's too low. The disk shaped winding on old AC flybacks is one solution to both these problems: it uses a tall stack of many layers each with a few turns. A slotted former holding multiple "pies" is another.
The self-resonant frequency is important, because you have to run an AC flyback at roughly that frequency to get the impressive arcs you see on YouTube etc.

Steve: Actually running the flyback eg. with a bridge driver at resonance results in its destruction, to get the massive arcs you might want to stay far away from the resonant frequency or its subharmonics (and running above the resonance results in little output).

Got the bobbin done.
If the 15 megavolt/meter rating for mineral oil is correct then I have plenty of insulation for the task at hand. The core I have is a little banged up (has been broken and super glued) but I don't think it'll matter much. It's a standard sized core and it shouldn't be too hard to find another one.
Actually 400 mil for the coils, not 300.
As for your concerns about resonance and the like, if I can get the needed voltage then this thing doesn't need to run at a really high frequency as it needs to drive no multiplier.
It's time to put on the copper. So 4Hv, should I do it nicely, layer by layer and put a single piece of teflon between the layers, or should I just pile the wire on?
