So try as I might I cannot get 6.5kV out of that AC fbt at 85khz. The core saturates before I can even get 700V out of the thing.
I decided to make an AC FBT using a modern core, this one from a projection TV. I have only 24 and 40ga magnet wire and 24 seemed too thick. 40 is a little thin but it's not as thin as typical FBT wire so I figured it'd work.
Halfway through the first layer I thought, wouldn't it be neat if I could get 75kV directly out of the thing? So that's what I'm planning to do, make a flyback-xray transformer.
So I plan on putting all my 40ga wire on there (~1/4lb), a daunting task to say the least. I managed to get the first layer done (~250 turns), but I'm not sure what I should use to insulate it. This transformer must be submerged in oil and a vacuum pulled for it to work (refrigerator compressor) and if I use plastic I fear that it'll prevent the mineral oil from insulating things (non permeable).
So what should I use 4HV? 3 turns of paper possibly?

Ya.. It is difficult to figure out what u are going to do. Let me know: How many turns @ primary?? What is the primary voltage ?? How many volts per turn?? kind of pulse, pulse lenght microseconds? ferrite cross section?
The first secondary layer has 250 turns ?? How many turns the secondary second layer ?
Maximun interlayer volts ? Thicknes of paper ? Dielectric strenght of paper. Secondary capacitance ?

I don't think it will. Plan C is to wind a regular AC flyback on a computer monitor core (150khz) and use a multiplier with that.
But for those who have made their own flybacks and or know something about HV transformer design, what should I use between layers, if those layers are to be oil saturated?

maybe you would get better results if you wind like this? Each island of wire has a higher potential than the next island of wire. thus you wcould use paraffin as a potting compound.

Hmm I see what you are saying, but the thing is I am not a machine capable of stacking wire into those fancy little pancakes one sees on old flyback transformers.
