Hello all, I decided to let more go, and I have put an ebay post up. These are the trannys that Patrick bought from me, to make his flyback power supply.

Hey - just purchased one of the last two! (sbli)

I know this is an old post, but did we ever figure out how to go about drawing an arc from these bad boys? Or will they have the black dot where the HV supply is?

Just run it with a 555 timer circuit, and bend the HV wire over to the pins (or any other method) and see what one arcs. Looking at the bottom, Core facing you, if you go straight north, it should be the pin to the right of that center line...if you get what im saying..imagen a center line, from the core, north...right of the line, should be your HV pin.

Oh...Forgot, yes the picture above with the black dot is the HV pin.

I'm a total noob when it comes to HV applications (just started here). If I were to "run" it with a 555 timer, where would my input be going? And said input would be about 12V, yes? I assume ridiculously high current for that kind of voltage boost (or could I use a low current to get an even LOWER current output... hmm).

Oh - is the "input" the red wire coming out the back? And considering this is AC driven... wouldn't it make more sense for it to have two inputs?

EDIT: Alright, so found that the big red wire is the HV OUTPUT. So then if that's the output, how will any of the pins arc, if the output is going through the big red wire on the other end? :P

And regarding the 555 timer... couldn't I just drive it from one of these (found on the Wiki): Link2 ?

Because the red wire i beleive is +HV, and the pin with the black dot is -HV. HV doesnt just shoot out like a tesla coil, you need to have a circuit.

Link2 Works for cheap
Link2 is better but requires more experience.

You have to wind wire around the outside of the core, like 10 turns, and connect it to either of the two drivers i listed. The only pin on the bottom you'll be using is the one with the black dot, so you can make arcs.

Ah, alright. Makes sense. Thanks for helping! :D I will probably have more questions when I receive it!

EDIT: So is voltage of output independent of current input? I.e. will the voltage output always stay proportional to voltage input, and just adjust output current to be proportionally the same as the input current?

Since a transformer is a ratio, the more voltage you put into it, the more voltage you get out of it.

Voltage is going to change when your arc on the HV side STARTS
Current will change how long you can draw that arc out.

If you have low current, and say it outputs 10KV, your arc will start at 1cm, and maybe draw to 1.2cm
If you have a lot of current, and it outputs 10KV, your arc will start at 1cm, and maybe draw 5cm.
If you have low voltage, it may put out for example, 5000V
if you have a higher voltage, it may put out 50,000V

All depends on what you give it. I have always used 555 driver from 12V to 80V my self.

Mm, I see. Well, I will do some tests and see what I can do to get the use I want out of it.
