Suceessful people are often considered great. They also tends ot be jerks. That is because they becone successful at the expense of others.

Edison is one of the examples of someone that is considered great but who is also a first class jerk.

I guess they get defined as jerks by the people they trampled on their way to greatness.

Thanks for finding the source, Anders. I see it was 2lb of mercury, not 1.

2lbs? That sounds like a dare to me...

But back OT, the limiting of chemicals is doing nothing but harming society. It's doing nothing to stop terrorism, mainly because if you outlaw something only outlaws have it. I fear lasers are next on the politicians' B& list, and eventually HV hobbyists are going to need a MOSFET license.

And I don't buy that swallowing mercury story; it's kind of hard to 'accidentally' swallow 1lb of Hg. The kid probably did it in a dare.

If you get a pound or two of mercury in your mouth while you're looking upwards, I think it would be hard not to accidentally swallow it, considering the very high density. Also, a pound of mercury is less than a shot glass in volume.

OK Grenadier, so staying on topic, why don't you tell us about all the chemicals you want to buy but can't. I can think of only two that would improve my life right now: leaded solder and SF6. OK, maybe freon too.

I made all my ZOMG bombs and pyros back when you could still get the stuff. :p I'm sure you still can, perhaps Martin King or a similar UK member can comment.

If government were run by scientists, we would have some sort of nightmare cold war between superpowers armed with bombs powerful enough to destroy the planet. Oh wait, that already happened when a group of physicists led by Einstein persuaded Roosevelt to start the Manhattan Project. At least we didn't do anything really wasteful to show off our technological prowess, like putting a man on the moon.

I've not found any difficulty in obtaining my favourite Ersin Multicore lead/tin solder, and an ebay search went straight to it:

Sulphur hexafluoride is still available from CK Gases, here:

Lets be honest, the kid probably had it coming.

And ill give you two of many examples, I needed these for staff approved experiments, in college chemistry class:

Lycopodium powder--- Forbidden --state of CA, Academic related rules for publicaly funded institutions
Propylene Carbonate--Forbidden---state of CA, Academic related rules for publicaly funded institutions

could not get these chemicals, despite having:

Chemistry professor agreed to allow experiment,
Chemistry lab Prep staff agreed to allow experiment,
Chemistry department chair signed off on it,
Chemistry, physics dean signed off on the proposal.

Until classified staff raised concerns related to CA law regarding using chemicals: Immeadiate halt to all professors/staff assisting this particular student. Despite, a college classroom, observation by staff, no chemistry would leave campus, And these chemicals were availiable and dispersed to "official" organic chem class labs, regularly. Still shot down... buy desk flying cowards.

Banning chemicals is tyrrany especially here in CA.

Grenedier is right, the rest of you are wrong. And thats just the way it is here in the US.

It's not that hard to get hold of many basic pyro. pre-cursors I've bought powdered aluminium and Potassium nitrate fairly recently. I can also get conc. Sulphuric and Hydrochloric acids over the counter from local plumbers and builders merchants. If necessary (I don't actually buy much in the way of raw materials) I also have industry contacts that I can buy trickier stuff through (And I suspect any serious experimenter will be able to cultivate similar contacts who trust them) As long as you're honest, many companies are only to glad to help as long as you sound like you know what your talking about and don't come across as someone who's going to kill themselves (or other people!) doing stupid things!

Well first of all, lateral science is entirely fictional (just noticed the link).

And second, a lot of chemicals can be bought easily online, but not all. I've not been able to get some chemicals in the past.

The main point is that one needs to go to extreme lengths to get some chemicals, and shipping on a some chemicals is ridiculous. If I want nitric acid I'm going to have to pay a lot of money to get it, no going down to the "local chem store" like these old scientists did. I can't go to a local store and buy electronic components, and that's a sad thing. (radioshack doesn't count, they have nothing but overpriced junk)

The irony is that several years ago I used to be jealous of the sort of stuff you seemed to be able to easily buy in the U.S., now it seems to be the other way round. You can't buy chemicals that may be dangerous but you can buy guns weird!

Martin.
