From what i saw in the patents for this the ionosphere and such was not mentioned. The principles were very plausible.
More or less, using a large tesla coil to create a charge in the air over a wide area (towers he called them) and antennas
on devices that would plan on using that charge. Like lighting a fluorescent bulb near a tesla coil. The "plan" was to have
enough "towers" to overlap enough area that it would all be covered. The rest of the things that have been mentioned here
i believe i saw involved with a different patent. You may have seen Teslas drawing of the earth with the hand pump sticking out
of it. Heres a quote from the book i have, it is written by Tesla in reference to oscillatory currents in the earth. This is directed at
how to recover it according to the text and it actually shoots the idea down. "Elecrtomagnetic hertz waves radiated horizontally
from a vertical conductor, slightly affected by conducting earth surface energy unrecoverable." I think many people are confused
because he had 3 different explanations, one being theory, one analogy, and one being realization. His realization is the system
i have been talking about. The theory and analogy are the ones that begin to sound like a pseudoscience manual.

Again, that is not a plausible idea. It might have been to some at the time, but today we know that such a system is useless except for transmitting small amounts of power over short distances at low efficiency. There may well have been nefarious reasons for stopping the research at the time, but the idea that we could all be drawing power from a worldwide wireless power grid powered by Tesla coils is... well, laughable. There will always be others who believe Tesla had working technology that was intentionally shelved -- presumably it is in Exxon's basement, next to the 200 mile per gallon carburetor and the car that runs on water -- but that's just not the case.
