Hello! I am working in my new 10Kva DRSSTC. I saw this steves schematic: Link2 at show how to ground the system to no get afraid with the sparks to primary or flash-over. I want to now, what is a good voltage to C3. And if you have another methods of grounding that work well?

Hi Gregory,

If you are making such a big system, I would think twice before grounding anything to house ground. No doubt that this works on a small system, but there is a lot more current flowing when you make a system 15 times bigger than the one Steve has on his site.

I don't use any decoupling on my big coil, I just make sure that I don't get any primary strikes. Use lot of strike rails, and you will be just fine smile

Cheers, Daniel

Hey! thanks.. I'm realy afraid is for flash over at the first test, i think that the coupling is very high.. And I think that flash over can blow my IGBTS too..

Hi Gregory,
I'm using exactly the same grounding system in my DRSSTC and it works fine, I had some heavy strikes on the primary coil without any problem on the electronics of the bridge...
C3 does not need to be high voltage, I'm using a standard X2 cap.

However, as Daniel said, I think that it is not really safe to connect the RF ground to the mains ground in a 10kVA coil (mine is around 1.5kVA)

Regards,

Luca

I have same system, but i am using ~600V varistor's, so they act as capacitors in normal application, and like wire when voltage is greater than 1000V
Also i have same varistor's connected between my electronic zero ( because i am using bipolar 12V supply) and ground, same done with Gate driver power supply. I don't know how well it works
( 12 in parallel, so ~600V and 4000J 78KApeak )

My idea is to use a separated ground to the strike rail and ground scheme.. But, I think not put the circuit GND together with the ground.. Do you think that will work???

I have tested attaching the house ground and RF ground together this seems to work fine. Just be sure to have a good RF ground for the high current stuff and the current finds it's way back threw the best ground.

I think to use two equals grounds, one for the secondary and another to strike rail and bridge ground. But I don't want to ground my circuits..

The way I run my coils is like this:

I have a big dedicated RF ground for the secondary and strike rail and I have the house ground.

All of these grounds are connected together at the coil and all electronics are grounded.

Controller negative rail is connected to RF ground
heatsink and fans are connected to RF ground
bridge negative bus is connected to RF ground via a 0.1uF cap

And house ground and the dedicated RF ground are connected together at the coil.

Here in brazil we don't have the house ground.. hehehe. But this isn't the problem.. My question is: "why controller negative rail is connected to RF ground?" To protect of spikes that can come from the bridge through the GDT, when happen a ground-strike?
