While looking for info at the Glassman site, I happened to see where they're using RG8 coax as output cable for their (up to) 60 kv power supplies.

I think this is the highest voltage I've ever heard of anyone using RG8 cable for (commercially at least).

Then, to see what other companies are doing, I checked the Spellman site. I was surprised to find out that they don't use it above 8 kv.

Anyway, this makes me wonder: Has anyone here ever used RG8 at 50 kv or higher? And if so, were there any problems/concerns?

Yeah Ive used the RG series for HV if I remember, I had it hold of 22 kv for 40 seconds. The problem is I exceeded its specs by a smidge. It was rated for either 600 or 800 volts (I cant remember), the core insulant was a layer of nitrogen foamed HDPE, then a spiral of solid HDPE ran the length of that, then the foil/braid/pvc jacket.

I did this for a short duration HV pulse experiment, so I really had to use it beyond specs, and did not care if it lived long. For service life or a commercial/industrial product I would not even contemplate such a use. For fear of human safety.

However, you may only think this is real RG, maybe its the IEC stuff spec'ed for tens of kV?

Also, the PE did get warm and soft, and the smell of ozone filled the air about a minute after the test was turned off, that spiral, was a one or two turns per inch deal, with a huge air channel that ran between the shield/center. Im sure it was filled with corona for the whole test, and took a while to leech out into my precious breathing air.

Arnt these the same articles?

bingo: For voltages above 8kV where a coaxial polyethylene cable is desired, Spellman uses cables specifically designed and manufactured for high voltage usage.

RG-8U may have been what I used, it was 0.6 inches in diameter, with a single 8 guage solid center strand.

I was told that in the Neon Sign industry (as an example) the highest costs of materials are the cabling which physically looks similar to Coax but (when cut & examined) instead of the "Fariday steel web" uses a layer of PETF or similar insulation. However that was designed for no more than 100ma

"we" use RG59 up to 10kv at which point we then kick in with a mammo flex cable which is good to 60kv

No one has mentioned whether they are talking about AC or DC.
The DC operating voltage is MUCH higher than the AC operating voltage. Maybe over 10 to 1 in some
cases. The 10 to 1 ratio was obtained by test and not from manufacture's data.

My experiment was pulsing DC.
