I am in the UK, unless Scotland suddenly got independence and nobody told me. I actually got busted by the TV licensing inspectors last month, and what's more, I had a TV in the house. I didn't want to lie to them, so I told them I had it, but managed to convince them I wasn't using it. (I honestly wasn't. It probably helped that my apartment has no TV antenna socket, since the previous owner had cable, and the set's own antenna was broken.)

They never asked to inspect my computers to see if any had a TV tuner card. But I guess I need to decide whether to buy a licence, or throw the TV away. I'll make sure and steal the flyback wink

Lost of very good points being made in this thread.

On top of the issues discussed above, The thing that gets my back up about the media is their behaviour towards people who have been seriously inujured or are grieving over the loss of a relative. A decent person would try to help an injured person, or in the case of bereavement try to offer some words of comfort, or alternatively stand back and give the person some space. It takes a really cold-blooded sick bastard to shove a camera in their face and then broadcast the footage on TV. The media ruthlessly exploits terrorist acts, natural disasters and the like to sell newspapers and get viewers.

I get my news from a selection of blogs and "traditional media" internet sites. By looking at different viewpoints I get get a much better picture of what's really going on.

Yea, good point DM. Sometimes it seems terrorists are more or less a creation of the modern media who need more news to fill their 200 satellite channels. But try telling that to someone who lost a friend or relative in a terrorist bombing.

I guess the point is that news agencies aren't here to tell the truth. Like all the rest of us, they're here to make a living by competing for limited resources. If you're a Darwinist (and what scientist isn't?), it should then be obvious that the news agencies that survive and push the others out of the news mainstream, and hence the ones whose point of view you get shoved in your face, aren't necessarily the least biased ones, but simply the ones that are best at grabbing Joe Public's attention. So instead of thoughtful debates on the roots of the Middle East conflict, we get scandal (though carefully calculated not to offend anyone who has a chance of suing the newsman and winning), blood and gore, and topless models on Page 3.

And that's in a completely free market. Once you factor in government intervention, you can't even count on reporting being motivated only by pure greed. So you might as well buy a roll of toilet paper and read that, even if its Page 3 is a little dull. wink

Terrorists are not a creation of modern media, however they are not new either. The problem is that technology has advanced to the point where a relatively small group of people(or a small amount of money) can cause a very large amount of terror(or actual destruction).

The point Steve was making was that the media is full of terrorists every single day. Yet he has never seen one and will never see one. He is more likely to find a lottery ticket on the street and be run over by a car when he bends over to pick it up. So most terrorists are virtual and exists in media only as do most criminals.

I havent been on here for a while, but here is my 2 cents worth, I belive the media is in the hands of the govermant becouse the media has control over the goverment. the gov wants to control the people so it has the media make all things evan simple things like meters and irons look bad, by rectriting the sale of theise itoms, the gov prevents the creation of inervatove thinks and suppress the inntelligent ones. The gov doesnet like smart people because they can figure out there plan. Thats why the media is relising these pics, to get them out lawed.

The only thing I watch on TV is Becker and Frasier. shades

Don't blame the media. Its the people who want to see those things. The media is simply exploiting the fact that we want to see those things. So we should all blame ourselves! I'm sure everyone on this board has had the curiosity to at least take a peek when passing an accident scene on the highway, subconciously hoping to catch a glimpse of something horrific.
