I wish I had my o-scope, I would like to see what the real waveform is on the HV 20kV side, and then what the primary V and I waves are too. With and without arc, for both the AC type and modern DC rectified type FBT.

Do what everyone else does, wind your own secondary. LOPT's were simply not designed for high output current as said above and can only take abuse for short durations. The driver is great if you have a transformer than can take the abuse.

In point of fact the ones I killed -=were=- DC. Realistically I haven't give it a fair shake with a big AC LOPT.
My MOSFETS never got hot either - even when the LOPTs died. Just a guess but I would imagine that the whole issue of heat sinking them were possibly due to using something OTHER than irfp250's.
