Customs are very switched on and know exactly what they're looking for...
I came back from the USA in November with a pair of Dyna Coils and a launch controller in my hand luggage.
Twice through the X-ray machine. Bag opened, me questioned about the "miscellanious electronics" and the coils/controller twice more through the X-ray machine for good measure.
The officer said they knew they were coils of some sort and not grenades/bombs, but were more interested in them being a makeshift tazer type of thing.
The netbook, PDA and camera were left alone and when I mentioned them, the officer just said they were ok, no need to remove them.
Other times my suit cases have been searched leaving the USA is when I've had them stuffed full of liquid smoke, grain alchohol and oil paints.
You'll get your gear, customs not being the problem. (IMHO) The other carriers/handlers, that's another story.
